Mawkish Diana Drivel

The BBC’s obituary editor Nick Serpell responded to a question about Great Britain’s national commemoration of the car crash that killed Princess Diana.

He said:

Hopefully today will the last on which we have to suffer mawkish media Diana drivel.

That just about says it all.

Poor taste alert, but this reminds me of the old golf joke:
What's a Grace Kelly?
Should have used a driver.
What's a Princess Di?
Shouldn't have used a driver.

It's amazing how much most Brits idolize her. A recent bio came out. Di was seriously mentally disturbed.

She bashed Prince Charles at prayer with a chair leg. 5 suicide attempts/gestures. Bulimia.

Poised, lovely, charismatic in public. Hysterical promiscuous harridan behind closed doors. Like a Borderline.

Poor student. Little education. Few friends. Last boyfriend was Egyptian playboy.

Brit royals Always dally. Even Charles' father.

The review of Di's bio in Daily Mail got Tons of nasty comments.

An old bio, by Sally Bedell Smith, quotes the psychiatrists who thought she was borderline... in truth she was. I also liked Julie Burchill's book about Di.

Julie Burchill's comment about her own book:

"Twenty years in August since Diana died. The anniversary is sad for me on many levels — she was definitely the final famous person I’ll have a pash on, and it reminds me that I haven’t yet earned back the whopping advance I was given for my book about her. To be fair, the book was an absolute stinker, written through a haze of gin, tears and avarice, containing such clodhopping clangers as ‘with blue skies in her eyes and the future in her smile’ and ‘affection swooshed out of her like a firework from a bottle’. Nurse, the screens!"
